In conversation with Henning Melber: From Anticolonialism to Postcolonialism
This event looks back at the history of anticolonialism and explore how it relates to current debates about postcolonial approaches and decolonial activism. Our guest is Henning Melber who came to Namibia as a son of immigrants in 1967, where he joined SWAPO in 1974. Henning Melber is today Extraordinary Professor at the Department of Political Sciences/University of Pretoria (since 2012) and at the Centre for Gender and Africa Studies/University of the Free State in Bloemfontein (since 2013), Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Commonwealth Studies at the University of London (since 2015), and since 2017 President of The European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes (EADI). Apart from his involvement in the African independence movement, he published widely on international organizations and the decolonization of Africa, on the history of Namibia and the Herero-Nama genocide, as well as memory studies in Germany and Namibia with special regard to colonialism. His latest books include Understanding Namibia The Trials of Independence (2014), Dag Hammarskjöld, The United Nations and the Decolonisation of Africa (2019), (with Reinhart Kößler) Völkermord – und was dann?
